One of what i really hate in songbird is that i often accidentally scrolling my mouse in playback area, changing playback volume in the process. It usually happen when i want to read the rest of lyrics in lyrics master add-on, or just scroll my song list. Sometimes i even scroll it so fast that the volume goes up to 100% and it really hurts my ears (and surprised me too). Therefore i want to disable it (I can slide the volume manualy, or using system volume). Here is what i did

1. open terminal
2. open file manager as root and browse to chrome subdirectory in songbird installation directory (in my case, i use
thunar
and my installation directory is “/usr/lib64/songbird-1.4.3/” )

su -
thunar /usr/lib64/songbird-1.4.3/chrome

	or

sudo "thunar /usr/lib64/songbird-1.4.3/chrome"

3. open “songbird.jar” using
File Archiver

4. Browse to “content/songbird/scripts/”
5. open “mouseWheelVolume.js” using text editor. I used gEdit
6. search for this line

// Auto-init/deinit registration
window.addEventListener("load", mousewheel_volume.onLoad, false);
window.addEventListener("unload", mousewheel_volume.onUnload, false);

	and change it to

// Auto-init/deinit registration
//window.addEventListener("load", mousewheel_volume.onLoad, false);
//window.addEventListener("unload", mousewheel_volume.onUnload, false);

7. Save. There should be a dialog from
File Archiver
asking whether you want to update the content of the (songbird.jar) jar. Choose yes. (Since my installation dir is /usr/lib64 i need root privelege to edit the jar, that is the reason behind step 2).

8. Restart songbird and you won’t be disrupted by the mouse wheel/scroll in playback area.

Since regularly used Fedora Linux last year (from Fedora 11 Leonidas, and then clean installed Fedora 12 Constatine), i used the properiatary nvidia driver from the rpmfusion. It’s not that i need 3D (something that nouveau driver could do). It just last time i used it before, I had problem making my aluminium macbook (5,1) sleep properly. The first sleep was okay but after waking up, there were unseen error that preventing the second sleep process works properly. With the recent news about nvidia drivers bug, I tried to use nouveau back. Not an easy process for me but in the end I finally succeeded switched back.

(If you use this as reference, you are at your own risk, I’m no expert at this =)
Note that this is what i did and might not be the best/correct/proper thing to do.
1. Removing the nvidia kmod package package

yum erase akmod-nvidia kmod-nvidia-2.6.32.9-67

2. Reboot

The boot message back to small font used by nouveau. But the screen blinked after entering run level 5. I could still move to tty2 using + + . I logged in as root and removed xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs (I just needed to list this one because it will pull the other dependency (all other kmod-nvidia-kernel package and xorg-x11-drv-nvidia)

3.
yum erase xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs

4. Reboot

No luck yet. Same as the previous problem. I thought maybe it’s because the nvidia-xconfig and/or nvidia-settings. I tried to remove the former first

5.
yum erase nvidia-xconfig

6. Reboot

Same problem. It’s nvidia-settings turn to be removed
7.
yum erase nvidia-settings

8. Reboot

Same problem. Maybe the nouveau driver was not loaded? I checked the grub config

9.
cat /boot/grub/grub.conf | more

and found this in a line “rdblacklist=nouveau”. I removed that part with nano.

10.
nano /boot/grub/grub.conf

11. Reboot

Not working yet. Cheking the xorg conf
12.
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | more

found a section that mentioning nvidia. Removing that section using nano again
13.
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Starting the x manually from the root
14.
startx

It worked, but the resolutuon was screwed up. 480x 320, (far) too small to my taste. I thought maybe it was because root and not my usual user. Tried to change the resolution from graphical menu, no other option available, just 480×320. Maybe i need to remove my xorg.conf altogether and not just a section. Wait, maybe rename it would be a better idea. Back to bash shell

15.
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

16. Reboot

And finally it’s working with native resolution 1280×800. Brightness control (f1 & f2) worked like a charm. Changed instantly unlike the nvidia counterpart. Next trying “suspend”. It works but it screwed up the brightness (changed to maximum). And changing the via the f1 and f2 not worked (the applet showing the brightness level showed up but no actual change). Suspend again worked over and over. The brightness problem let me down. Even suspend it first won’t change the actual brightness level (the trick i used in nvidia driver)

Was it because I’m using XFCE? Time to try other Desktop Environment. GNOME suffer the same problem while KDE actually could change the brightness? o.O. I don’t mind using KDE actually, however i want o use XFCE as it is my DE for the past months. I log out and login to XFCE again. The brightness still frozen, however I had changed it to my liking while in KDE and XCFE preserve it. Suspend XFCE and waking it up display the same level of brightness. Well I can live up with that. I won’t shutdown the system for a while anyway =)
